For all of those people who scoff about those of us who are freaking out about the reboot, saying that we’re hypocrites who can’t stand change: fuck you. This quote is from someone who really can’t accept change.
I’m not saying that Babs isn’t a good Batgirl or that her new run won’t be great, I’m just saying that she’s has moved on from this role. Barbara Gordon outgrew the role of Batgirl before The Killing Joke. She grew as a character when she decided she wouldn’t just quit when she was paralyzed. She became someone who the entire DC superhero community recognizes her skills and her knowledge. In short, Barbara Gordon is more than Batgirl. Saying that she should go back is an insult to all she has done. Saying that she should back invalidates the growth she’s gone through as Oracle. Saying she should go back practically screams that she is worth more as a woman without disabilities than as a woman in a wheelchair.
So most of us aren’t the change hating nerds you think we are. We just don’t want to see years of history and growth thrown away just because DC is trying to get new readers that only have experience with the TV series. And that’s really all this is. Barbara Gordon is the iconic Batgirl. About six months ago I had no clue who Cassandra Cain or Stephanie Brown were, but that doesn’t stop me from loving them now.
